Maria's Wine Journeys

A journey into the soul of Cyprus wine

Hello, everybody.) My name is Maria, and through Maria’s Wine Journeys I create curated wine tours in Cyprus, intimate wine tasting experiences, and cultural journeys for those who wish to discover the island through its most ancient traditions.

Cyprus is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, and its wines are inseparable from its history, landscape, and spirit.
Today, I invite you to begin this journey with a story — the story of Commandaria, Cyprus’ most legendary wine, a treasure recognized by UNESCO and cherished for centuries.

Commandaria — a Wine That Remembers

There are wines you drink…
and then there are wines that tell stories.

Commandaria is one of those rare wines that seems to remember everything.
The sun that ripened the grapes.
The monks who guarded its secrets.
The kings who raised their cups to it in candlelit halls.

Born in the mountains of Cyprus, where time moves more slowly, Commandaria is not rushed. The grapes are left under the sun until they soften, darken, and concentrate their sweetness — as if the island itself is whispering its warmth into them.

In the glass, Commandaria glows like liquid amber.
Deep gold, touched with copper and honey.
It looks like sunset captured and held still.

Its aroma is gentle but profound:
dried figs, dates, roasted nuts, honey, caramel, hints of orange peel and warm spices.
One breath, and you are already somewhere else — perhaps in a stone monastery, perhaps at a medieval feast.

The first sip is soft and embracing.
Sweet, but never overwhelming.
Velvety, warm, with flavors of raisins, toffee, baked fruit, and a long, lingering finish that stays like a memory you don’t want to let go of.

Legend says that Commandaria was loved by kings and crusaders, praised by poets, and offered as a gift worthy of emperors. Some even called it “the wine of kings and the king of wines.” And yet, despite its glory, it has remained humble — rooted in the same villages, the same traditions, the same sun-drenched land.

Today, Commandaria is officially recognized as part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage, a living treasure that Cyprus continues to protect with pride and devotion.

This is the story I love to share through Maria’s Wine Journeys.
With me, Commandaria is not just something you read about or taste once — it becomes a journey. We visit the mountain villages where it is born, step into traditional wineries, meet the people who still make it with patience and respect, and slow down for a tasting that feels like time itself has paused.

Together, we don’t just drink wine.
We travel through it.
We listen to it.
We let it tell us its secrets.

This is not a wine to be rushed.
It is a wine for listening.
For stories told slowly, one sip at a time.
