Scent of Pines and Pink Birds: The Quiet Season in Protaras, Cyprus
Libra Arte
When autumn arrives, Protaras turns gold. Soft light dances on the water, the beaches fall silent, and time begins to slow down. Every November, the first true rain brings the flamingos back to Cyprus. They settle across the salt lake near Larnaca under soft grey light, pale pink against a pewter sky, and linger until spring. By then, the summer crowds are long gone. Shutters are down along the waterfront, the sunbeds are stacked away, and for a few months, the island gently returns to itself.
At LibraArte, our art villa in Protaras, our doors stay open throughout the quiet season. November still carries the warmth of late autumn with daytime temperatures around 21 - 23°C and a sea that welcomes a peaceful swim. As the weeks progress into December and January, a cooler rhythm arrives - occasional coastal rain, crisp sea air, and evenings that settle in early.
Later in the season, beachfront cafès pack up until April, and the island slows to a crawl. But what you get instead is something far rarer. An empty coastline, and a path along the headland you might share with nobody all morning. Low, golden light sliding across the water. The scent of damp pines at Cape Greco after rain. On quieter afternoons, you return to a home filled with original art, brew a pot of herbal mountain tea brought down from the villages, and realize there is nowhere you need to rush to. It is a quiet that feels restorative rather than empty—a place where a long, demanding year can finally loosen its grip.
On bright mornings, drive out to Larnaca Salt Lake and watch the birds against the horizon. On a slow weekend, head into the foothills toward Lefkara and the stone hamlets above it—far more charming when the summer heat has cleared. Pick up local honey or wild thyme tea from a village market, then bring it back for a quiet evening by the terrace.
If you crave an evening of music, November offers an unexpected highlight. On 19 November, Richard Clayderman performs at Monte Caputo in Limassol alongside a Cypriot string ensemble. His melodies—the kind etched into collective memory—make for an intimate, nostalgic detour before returning to the stillness of Protaras.
If this slower rhythm is what you have been needing, come and settle in. Book ten nights or more directly between 1 November and 31 March, and private return transfers from Larnaca Airport are complimentary. No taxi queues—just a driver waiting at arrivals, a curated welcome basket on the kitchen counter, and all the time in the world.
Practical Notes for the Quiet Season
The Weather & Sea: November offers mild autumn weather ( 21 - 23°C ) with water warm enough for a comfortable swim (around 21–22°C), so pack your swimwear for sunny November afternoons, along with a windbreaker and comfortable footwear for scenic trails. By December and January, the cooler winter rhythm sets in with days around 16–18°C—perfect for hiking, coastal walks, and crisp sea air. A light layer for sunny afternoons, a warm knit for the evenings, and comfortable walking shoes are all you need.
Getting Around: Winter buses operate less frequently. Having a rental car gives you the freedom to easily explore Cape Greco, mountain trails, and nearby towns. We can arrange car hire directly to the villa upon request.
Dining & Local Flavours: While seasonal resort venues close, local spots stay lively. In Pernera, places like Di Capilla remain open for sea-view dining, while traditional tavernas in Kapparis continue serving fresh seasonal meze.
Coastal Walks: Follow the scenic boardwalk from Ayios Nikolaos chapel down to Fig Tree Bay, peaceful and solitary at this time of year. Explore the pine trails and sea caves of Cape Greco National Forest Park, or catch the sunrise at Konnos Bay when the water is completely flat.
The Flamingos: Large flocks gather at Larnaca Salt Lake from late autumn through early spring. Viewing towers and quiet walking trails along the lake shore offer the best vantage points.
Winter Festivities in Paralimni: If you visit during December and early January, the nearby town square of Paralimni (just a few minutes drive away) transforms for the holidays with Christmas lights, festive stalls, and seasonal attractions, often including an open-air ice rink for families.
The Villa: A spacious, art-filled retreat with five bedrooms, a rooftop terrace overlooking the sea. You can also arrange an in-villa massage treatment or a private wine tasting during your stay.
